It is noted in the news that, journalist Afanasyev who was charged because of his news reporting he made blaming the authorities for not doing enough to find survivors in his articles based on eyewitness and insider accounts after the explosion at Russia’s largest hydroelectric plant in Sayano Shushenskaya. He was charged of slander less than 24 hours after the publication of his critical article. After the charge he underwent a brutal attack near his home.

IPI Director, David Dadge views this brutal attack to Afnasyev as a typical danger which journalists in Russia are subjected to: “The authorities were very quick to bring unwarranted charges against Afanasyev over his reporting, which made him a lightning rod for criticism of the authorities. We hope they will be equally eager to pursue his attackers.”

It should be noted that the death toll from the Sayano-Shushenskya disaster till this day has risen to 74, with one dam worker still missing.
