The director of the Internet site of Mexico’s Radio Vision, Norberto Miranda, was killed last week by  five gunmen who entered his office. According to the information given to International Eurasia Press Fund (IEPF) by International Press Institute (IPI), Miranda is the fifth journalist to be killed in Mexico this year.

According to news reports, Miranda was murdered because of his arranging radio show on crime commited by narko cartel El Cartel de Juarez and his article written under the pseudonym of “El Gallito”. Two days before Miranda’s murder the body of freelance photographer Jaime Omar Gándara San Martín was found in Chihuahua.

It should be noted that in April 2008, IPI International Press Freedom and Freedom of Expression Mission found the main obstacles to the free exercising of journalism in Mexico. The following are included there: organised crime; corruption; impunity; direct attacks by the police and military forces; and the lack of political will on the part of federal and state governments to resolve cases of assaults on journalists and to guarantee their safety.
