Last Year was the Most Dangerous Year for Journalists

The most number of journalist deaths in the last decade was registered in 2009.The information about it was expressed in World Press Freedom Review disseminated by International Press Institute (IPI). While the highest figure till now in the last decade was 100, 110 journalists were killed in 2009. Therefore last year was considered the most dangerous and grave year for journalists.
It was indicated in the review, that 735 journalists were killed in the last decade. 170 of them were killed in Iraq. Despite, more places of the world were seen as dangerous spots for journalists. Phillipines is ranked second, Colombia is the third, and Mexico is the fourth in this row.
Russia is the fifth based on the number of journalist deaths. 35 journalists were killed in Russia in 2000-2009.
IPI Director David Dadge noted that the courage of journalists who provided the public with information would not be forgotten, and said that the pressure upon governments in order to find their murderers would continue.
Outcomes/results of the last decade, as well as press freedom will be in focus at the IPI’s World Congress in Vienna and Bratislava to be held between 11-14 of September, 2010.
